The monsoon season brings some relief from the hot weather conditions of summer, the same cannot be said about individuals constructing their house as the rains pose various problems. The common myth about construction activities being put on hold due to rains is not necessarily true, as house construction in rainy seasons can be undertaken with some proper management.

As per expert advice, excessive exposure to rainwater during building of the structure may lead to problems in terms of material degradation and cost increase.

1. Protect Construction Materials from Moisture

Building materials like cement, electrical fixtures, plywood, and paints are very susceptible to moisture. Exposure to water could render the cement useless, whereas moisture in timber products could cause warping.

All building materials should be kept under cover, preferably elevated from the ground surface. Covering the building materials in waterproof material would save you from losses during the rainy season.

2. Ensure Proper Site Drainage

One of the major threats in the monsoon season is that water accumulates at the site. Accumulation of water at the construction site will result in weakening of the soil as well as delays in constructing foundations.

It is advised to construct makeshift drainage pathways before the arrival of monsoon to avoid problems caused due to excessive rainfall. Proper drainage not only safeguards the structure but also the construction schedule.

3. Monitor Concrete Work Carefully

The concrete gets strong when it goes through the curing process. A little bit of moisture is actually good for the concrete when it is curing. If it rains too much when you are first pouring the concrete it can wash away the cement particles.

If you want to build houses when it is raining you should always check the weather forecast before you do anything with the concrete like pouring the concrete slabs or the foundations or anything else that has to do with the concrete.

4. Secure Exposed Structural Elements

Column, beam, and half finished walls are usually left exposed during construction work. Excessive rainfall may result in excessive moisture accumulation and damages to these surfaces.

Proper temporary covers can be used to protect exposed surfaces until further work is done on them.

5. Pay Attention to Waterproofing Beforehand

A lot of people who own homes do not think about waterproofing until the work is done. When the rainy season comes that is when we see problems that were hidden before.

We should check the terraces, bathrooms, balconies and the outside walls of our homes all the time. It is much better to fix waterproofing problems when we are building something than to fix the damage that water can cause later. This is because fixing problems during building is a lot cheaper than fixing them after the damage is done. Waterproofing can save us a lot of money and trouble on the run.

6. Conduct Frequent Site Inspections

Rainfall can make many hidden problems visible quite easily, like inadequate drainage facilities, seepage locations, and wear and tear.

Routine inspections enable project teams to address such problems before they escalate into costly renovations. However, for people who are not able to visit the site regularly, modern construction management techniques such as the use of KONNBOT’s live site tracking cameras can be extremely helpful as you can track the site from anywhere.

Conclusion

Construction during the rainy season need not necessarily undermine the quality of construction work. With the use of suitable protective materials, proper drainage planning, good scheduling, and periodic inspections, house construction in the rainy season will be smooth sailing.

But preparation is the name of the game. A well prepared site can cope much better with the difficulties posed by rains than sites that take remedial actions too late. With the help of the right construction company like KONNBOT, one will be able to preserve the value of his property despite the rainy season.
